A FRESH set of nails is the holy grail of feeling truly polished and pampered.

But with salons closed right now, achieving a chip-resistant, glossy gel manicure at home is something more of us are giving a go—and the good news is, there are plenty of nail lamps out there promising quick curing time and professional results.

Mylee’s Pro Salon Series LED Lamp has been on our radar for a while: it’s a hit with beauty fans who want their gels cured in a fraction of the time it takes for UV/LED lamp to do the same—which means far less exposure to UV rays.

The magnetic, removable tray allows it to be used for pedicures too, while the LED bulbs promise a 50,000-hour lifespan—so you’ll basically never need to replace them. Plus with Mylee products stocked in many salons, it’s nail technician-approved. Winner.

Intrigued and desperate to do something about our unloved nails, we decided to try it out. Here’s how we got on…

What were our first impressions?

Our Mylee lamp was delivered in excellent time, and once unboxed, we could see it was going to be really straightforward to get started.

The lamp requires no set up: all we had to do was take it out of the box, peel off the plastic on the magnetic plate and plug it straight in with the DC adaptor (which comes with three different plug fittings, handy for different socket types around the world).

It also came with a little explainer booklet including details of the product’s one year warranty, which is always good to keep hold of (aka file away and forget about).

How easy is it to use?

We’ll start by stating the obvious: we are by no means, professional nail technicians. In fact, we might as well be honest and say we basically suck at doing our nails; the idea of at-home gels has always scared us.

Despite being total rookies, we were pleasantly surprised then, at how easy the nail lamp was to use. Armed with our Mylee base coat, gel polish and top coat, we followed the instructions for the perfect gel polish. The lamp is pretty much fool-proof to use, with three settings for three curing cycles: 15, 30 and 60 seconds.

With no on/off switch, the lamp turns on when you choose your timer cycle by pressing one of three buttons on the back of the unit. After each cycle is finished, it simply turns itself off again. Easy-peasy!

We didn’t try a pedicure but we’ve no doubt it would be just as simple. All you need to do is remove the magnetic metal tray, pop your foot under the lamp and hey presto.

Does it only work with Mylee gel polishes?

No, not at all! According to the info booklet, the lamp is suitable for use with most well-known gel nail brands, so there’s no need to buy a whole new set of polishes from Mylee exclusively.

What did we like most?

As total nail lamp novices, we loved that the Mylee Pro Salon Series LED lamp was simple to use straight away, plus the design is sleek and lightweight, making it really easy to set up in different rooms around the house, and pack away in the box when it’s out of use.

The curing time was totally accurate too: we cured our base coat for 30 seconds, did a few coats of our main coat for another 30 seconds each, and then finished with a top coat which was cured for a final 60 seconds.

With so many layers applied in such a short space of time, there’s always that slight disbelief with gel polish: can it really have set? But sure enough, after doing the above, we wiped the tacky layer of our nails with Mylee’s Prep & Polish Wipe and our nails were completely dry and hard. Boom!

We were also impressed with the distribution of the light, which perfectly accommodated all five fingers and cured them evenly. We can’t speak for whether this is an issue with other lamps, but as the Mylee Salon Series LED lamp is 20% bigger than its predecessor, it’s definitely roomy enough to place the whole width of your hand in—without worrying about your nails hitting the sides and smudging.

What did we like least?

The DC adaptor lead. It’s just too short! We found we had to locate a socket in our house and move our table nearer, in order to comfortably use the lamp. It’s not the worst thing in the world, and we’ll probably just get hold of a longer adaptor in future.

We also found that the buttons, being at the back of the lamp, mean you have to sort of stand up and hover over the unit to make sure you’re pressing the right one. Again, not the end of the world. And after a few times using the lamp, we’re sure that muscle memory would probably kick in and we’d just intuitively know where the buttons are!

The verdict

Considering it’s used by pro nail technicians, we think the Mylee Pro Salon Series LED Lamp is very reasonably priced at £42. And provided it delivers on its 50,000 hour lifespan, there’s no reason why you couldn’t keep using this bad boy for years.

In terms of the curing speed, it completely met its promise of flawlessly cured gels in 15 to 30 seconds which impressed us. The buttons being at the back threw us slightly but it certainly wasn’t a dealbreaker—and if we could get on with it as beginners to the nail lamp world, then we’re sure you will too.

Overall it’s a big thumbs up from us. We’d definitely recommend!
