A thug boasted ‘I chopped your cops with a cleaver’ after launching a frenzied attack on two police officers.

David Dowson, 26, turned on PCs Josh McCorry and Glenn Coletta as they were returning a child to a block of flats in Wishaw, North Lanarkshire, on June 14 last year.

He claimed he knew the child and would take him as the two officers were struggling to enter the secure close.

Dowson then threatened to ‘put holes’ in the PCs, adding: ‘Come to my gaff and see what happens.’

He was warned about his behaviour and he allowed PC Coletta access to the close. That’s when Dowson grabbed the constable and pulled out a meat cleaver.

Prosecutor Margaret Barr said: ‘He raised it above his head before striking down with full force towards PC Coletta’s face.’

PC Coletta blocked the blow with his hand, but was left severely injured.

His partner raced into the close to help, but Dowson punched him and brought the cleaver down full force towards PC McCorry’s head, causing him to fall to the ground.

He kept swinging the weapon at the officer, making contact at least once. One officer managed to escape through the door while the other jumped out of a window to get away.

Reinforcements arrived and Dowson was eventually handcuffed and put in a police van.

As he was being removed, he shouted to bystanders: ‘Cops tried to come into my house without a warrant. I went at them with a meat cleaver. Aye, I chopped up your cops with a cleaver.’

The shocking incident emerged as Dowson appeared via video link at the High Court in Glasgow, where he pleaded guilty to attempting to murder PC McCorry. He also admitted endangering the life of PC Coletta.

PC McCorry, 23 at the time of the attack, had the tip of his right thumb sliced off and suffered a 3cm cut to the top of his head.

He said: ‘I actually just feel lucky to be alive. I thought I was going to die.’

PC Coletta required surgery to a severe injury to his right hand, which has left scarring.

He said: ‘Thinking back on it is sickening. It actually keeps me awake at night thinking about what happened. I’m lucky to be alive.’

Dowson was remanded pending sentencing next month.
