Leapfrogging pig escapes slaughter after daring escape from back of trailer

A pig has made a remarkable escape from certain death, seemingly by leapfrogging out of a trailer on the way to an abattoir.

The desperate animal was one of three being transported through Devon by farmer Sarah Allan to a slaughterhouse 11 miles away.

But Mrs Allan, 29, was dumbstruck when she arrived to find that were only two left.

Sarah and her husband Stuart believe the pig was too small to climb over the back of the trailer himself and so must have got on top of his two condemned friends and leapt for freedom from their backs.

The pig was eventually retrieved and taken back to the farm – though not after attempting to run away again in a field – and is said to be sad about the deaths of his friends.

Upon initially finding the pig missing, Mrs Allen started a large-scale search involving friends and neighbours back home in Langtree.

But then a local farmer took to social media to report a lone pig wandering in one of his fields.

A picture shows the pig walking happily through a large grassy field.

Mrs Allen says the animal has saved himself – and is now destined to stay on her smallholding.

She said: ‘It was just a clearly a mad day. On the way to the abattoir we were saying how smoothly it had all gone.

‘We got in to join the queue for the abattoir and my husband said: “Sarah there’s only two?”

‘I said: “Don’t be silly there can’t be two.” I was in shock.’

Sarah keeps three pigs on her land each year and tries to share the meat out between her friends and family.

The mother-of-two insists that her 16 chickens and three ducks are pets.

But she was relieved when the farmer, from nearby village Milton Damerel, posted on a Facebook community page reporting the missing pig.

She branded the find ‘the joy of social media’.

‘We were out for hours looking for him. He’d managed to come straight out of the trailer and onto a 60 mile an hour road.

‘He’s then gone straight in the field next to the road.

‘We don’t tend to name them but a lot of people have said maybe we should name him Milton – after where he was found.’

Sarah has some sympathy with the pig, after chasing him around the field to bring him home.

The other two pigs were killed, which Sarah says has left ‘Milton’ feeling down.

‘The other two pigs have gone to the abattoir – so he is a little bit sad about his friends,’ she said.

‘I sat up with him last night – he misses his friends.

‘But he’s safe and well. He’s become quite a famous pig over the last 24 hours.’

‘I think this piggy is destined to stay with us.’
