It saw a young girl run down from the top of a cliff into a cave to get away from her father, and throughout the episode, the action kept cutting back from the present day to that situation.

The girl moved deeper and deeper into the cave, and as it grew darker, she pulled out her mobile phone and turned its torch on to help her see where she was going.

However, viewers immediately picked up on the fact that mobile phones at that time were very basic, and extras like torches didn’t come along until a few years later.

Taking to Twitter, one viewer wrote: “That girl in the cave has a torch on her phone. iPhones like that have only existed for 8 years or so, meaning the timing is all wrong if it’s the murderer lady as young girl. It’s about 20 years wrong.”

Another added: “Since when would there have been any sort of mobile phone with a camera flash to use as a torch back in 1997.”

A third tweeted: “More inaccuracies in #Intruder … they didn’t have compact smart phones in 1997, and they definitely didn’t have lights to explore caves with.”

Meanwhile a fellow viewer wrote about the blunder: “Love the flashback to 1997, using a modern phone with a torch ..absolute b*****ks.”

Another shared: “#intruder mobile phones with flashlights came in in 2002, why show a scene with phone flashlight from 1997….continuity?”

Viewers couldn't help but mock the blunder

Their scathing comments come after other viewers decided to “switch off” after Tuesday’s second episode.

Many viewers slammed the drama as “dire” and “boring” and didn’t feel like they could see it through to Thursday’s conclusion.

Intruder continues on Thursday, April 8 at 9pm on Channel 5.
