A BELOVED TV director who worked on Home And Away has died in a freak accident while using a hedge trimmer.

Dad-of-two John Clabburn, 52, fell around 10ft from a ladder after cutting his arm with the cordless saw at his home near Sydney, Australia.

He had lost “a large amount of blood” and was in cardiac arrest when paramedics arrived in Artarmon, in Sydney’s northern shores.

They were able to stabilise him and took him to hospital but he died later on Tuesday evening.

Friends and colleagues were in mourning today for the TV and film veteran, known as JC.

His three decades in the industry included directing on shows such as Home And Away, Underbelly, Survivor, LoveChild, The Wiggles and Wonderland.

Wife Melissa, 56, said John had bought the power tool earlier that day to catch up on DIY and gardening jobs around the house.

She told Sydney’s Daily Telegraph: “I heard a branch break. I was in the kitchen and felt something was wrong, and called out to check he was all right.

“When I went out to the back garden he was crawling on the ground on his stomach.

“There was so much blood, he was clutching his torso, I kept getting towels to stem the flow but the blood wouldn’t stop.”

Melissa said her husband stayed calm and asked her to call an ambulance, knowing she had a phobia of blood.

“He kept it together for me but I know he would have been in incredible pain,” she said.

The couple were married for 27 years after meeting on the set of 1994 TV series Heartland, starring starred Cate Blanchett.

They had two sons, Josh, 23, and Lewis, 21.

Melissa added she was still in shock and half-expecting her husband to turn up at the family home.

She said: “One minute we were admiring how straight the hedge was looking and what a great job he had done – he was so meticulous, he had a great eye for detail – the next John was in an ambulance.

“I just can’t believe he’s gone. I knew it was bad but I expected him to pull through.”

Puberty Blues actress Susan Prior paid tribute to her friend, who she worked with on the TV show Les Norton in 2019.

She said: “I can’t stop thinking of you today.

“Sending all my love to your family, and the multitudes of people you worked with in film and TV as a top class 1st AD.

“You made your job look so easy. You will be mightily missed by so many people in this industry and beyond.”

Another friend said: “I’m in utter shock. I just had dinner with him and Melissa last week.

“I’m shooting in NZ and can’t stop thinking about him and the wonderful way he was with us all. We lost one of the best there is. So sad.”
