As the second wave of the novel coronavirus rages across India, many children are being orphaned after losing their parents to COVID-19. This has led to many good Samaritans amplifying calls for adoption and asking people to adopt these orphaned children. However, while their intention may be good, this can lead to child trafficking. Instead, actor Dia Mirza suggests calling organizations that help children. “Our children are deeply affected by the ongoing crises. Many are losing parents to Covid-19. These organizations can help us help our children,” she wrote in an Instagram post. The organizations she supports are:
Childline : Helpline 1098 @savethechildren_india
DCPCR : +919311551393 / NCPCR : 1800-121-2830
Kailash Satyarthi Children’s Foundation : 1800-1027222
Filmfare had shared Mirza’s post and the actress had commented under it, saying that calls for adopting children through unverified sources are illegal and dangerous. “Thank you for spreading the word, Filmfare. It is very alarming how many people are sharing posts asking people to adopt children they have found! This is dangerous and illegal. Request all to not amplify such information and report immediately to @savethechildren_india @ncpcr_ @childline1098 @dcpcr_delhi @kailash.satyarthi,” she wrote.
