A science-obsessed four year-old can recite all 118 elements on the period table from memory in just 80 seconds. Bhavik Jain, from Overland Park in Missouri, is now a world record-holder for his speedy recall of the elements’ names, according to the Global Records and Research Foundation.

Bhavik’s mother Shruti claims her son’s interest in the periodic table was piqued when she served him a glass of milk, and told him about the importance of calcium in his bones.

She says Bhavik then proceeded to ask her about calcium and other elements – prompting her to make 118 flash cards to teach him all their names.

‘Asked if he knows anything else about the elements he’s memorized the names of, Bhavik said: ‘Sodium is found in salt, and magnesium is found in apples, and hydrogen and helium are found in gases.’

He said his teacher said ‘congratulations’ on learning of his record – but that his friends said ‘nothing’ about the achievement.

Bhavik’s father Kapil was more enthusiastic about his son’s achievement, and told the Shawnee Mission Post: ‘We’re very proud of him. To be very honest, we were elated when we got word that it’s actually a world record, it’s very exciting.

‘Our main thing is to guide him as much as possible and give him all the right tools and resources in life.

‘He’s really smart, and we want to make sure we’re guiding him in the right direction.’

Bhavik says he wants to be a space-based doctor when he grows up, and told KMBC: ‘If anyone is sick in space, I could help them, and even on Earth for anyone who is sick.’

Bhavik also has another record attempt in his sight – he wants to break the record for the fastest recitation of the world’s countries and capitals, and has so-far learned 200.
