Boy, 1, on ventilator after being shot jaw and temple road rage attack

One year-old Kayden Swann is in intensive care after he was shot twice in the face during a road rage attack in Chicago on Tuesday

A one year-old boy is critically-ill on a ventilator after he was shot in the jaw and temple during a road rage attack. Kayden Swann remains gravely ill in intensive care at Chicago’s Lurie Children’s Hospital following Tuesday’s shooting.

He was a passenger in a Lincoln that was shot at, and was struck by two separate bullets fired from an SUV. The Lincoln then crashed, with Kayden’s mom leaping out of the car to try and flag down help.

A Good Samaritan who witnessed the shooting pulled over and rushed Kayden and his mom to hospital said: ‘She had a baby in her arm, and she was screaming and trying to get people to pull over.

‘There was a lot of crying and screaming: “My baby! Baby has been shot!”‘ The quick-thinking of that Good Samaritan, who did not want to be named, is credited with saving precious seconds and may have saved Kayden’s life.

The Good Samaritan added: ‘I’m hoping the baby recovers. I hope, I hope that it actually made a difference.’

Lurie’s pediatric intensive care director Dr Marcelo Malakooti said Kayden had suffered a ‘very serious bullet injury.’ He said Kayden’s condition was ‘grave,’ with a subsequent update saying the toddler was ‘improving somewhat.’

A further update on Kayden’s health is expected later on Wednesday afternoon.

Meanwhile, a man who was in the Lincoln carrying Kayden has been arrested in connection with the shooting.
