The body found in an Epping Forest pond on Monday is that of missing student Richard Okorogheye, police have confirmed.

The teenager, who had been missing for two weeks before his remains were found, had previously confided in his family about his struggles with pressure at university and dealing with sickle cell disease while shielding.

On Monday, police confirmed they had found a body, with his mother told matched the description of Richard.

His family were being kept updated of developments and supported by specially trained officers, police added.

Richard left his family home in the Ladbroke Grove area of west London on the evening of March 22, and was reported missing two days later.

As someone with a rare disease, he would only leave the house to go to hospital for regular blood transfusions and was shielding from coronavirus.

CCTV later showed him the same Monday he went missing boarding the number 23 bus southbound in Ladbroke Grove at 8.44pm.

Police say he then took a taxi journey from the W2 area of London to a residential street in Loughton in Essex.

His mum, Evidence Joel, said her son told her he was visiting a friend.

But he was seen on CCTV walking alone on Smarts Lane, Loughton, towards Epping Forest at 12.39am on Tuesday March 23.

His mother previously said he had left home without his medication, wallet or jacket.

She had explained that her son had spoken of ‘struggling to cope’ with university pressures and had been shielding during the Covid-19 lockdown.
