Another 45 people die with Covid as UK records 2,763 cases

Another 45 people have died with coronavirus in the UK, where a further 2,763 cases have been reported.

It comes as the UK changed its advice to say under 30s should be offered alternative vaccines to the Oxford/AstraZeneca jab.

The latest figures mean that some 4,367,291 infections have been confirmed in the country since the pandemic began, while 126,927 deaths have been reported. Separate figures published by the UK’s statistics agencies show there have been 150,000 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

Wednesday’s daily figures are likely to be artificially inflated to some extent by a lag in reporting over the Easter weekend.

Earlier today, NHS England said a further 42 people who tested positive for coronavirus have died in the country’s hospitals, bringing the total number of confirmed deaths in the settings to 86,476.

Patients were aged between 33 and 98 and all except two (aged 33 and 55) had known underlying health conditions.

The deaths occurred between October 20 and April 6.

There were 17 other deaths reported with no positive Covid-19 test result.

In Scotland, five Covid-19 patients have died with the virus in the past 24 hours, along with 289 new cases.

It means the death toll in the country now stands at 7,619, while a total of 220,782 people have tested positive.

Wales recorded just 82 new cases and no new deaths on Wednesday.

Public Health Wales has recorded 210,023 positive cases and 5,521 deaths since the pandemic began.

No further deaths of people who had previously tested positive for Covid-19 in Northern Ireland were reported by the Department of Health on Wednesday.

Another 88 confirmed cases were recorded in the last 24-hour reporting period.

It brings the respective totals to 2,121 deaths and 117,821 cases.

More than 31.5 million people have now received a first vaccine dose, with over 5.5 million having a second jab.
